Augmentation is a process referring to the addition/reproduction of artificial bone in surgery. Surgeons perform the procedure prior to or during implantation because most patients with long-lost tooth(s) experience atrophy (depletion) of bone tissue. For a dental implant to be fully functional, sufficient bone volume is needed. It is the purpose of augmentation to create the necessary bone volume.
Sinus lifting refers to the elevation of the sinus floor with artificial bone, whereby bone volume is created for the implant.
