What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is a branch of dentistry, which studies the disease, treatment, and maintenance of the supporting tissues around the teeth.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues around the tooth that is initially easy to treat, but if complicated, can lead to the loss of teeth.

What are the symptoms of periodontitis?

Periodontitis has the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Discolored gums
  • Hypersensitivity (to cold/hot/acidic/bitter food)
  • Gingival swelling (hyperemia)
  • Occasional sore gums

 

What causes periodontitis?

Periodontitis is more common in people over the age of 35. It is usually caused by plaque and calculus that have accumulated on the teeth for a long time, caused by oral bacteria that are present in large amounts in the plaque and calculus that have accumulated on the teeth over time.

How can you prevent periodontal disease?

Periodontitis can be avoided by periodic (every 6 months) dental hygiene cleanings.
